Cleaning Sidewalks and Gutters of Snow & Ice

It shall be the duty of every owner or occupant of every lot or piece of land to keep the gutters and the sidewalks adjoining his lot or piece of land at all times clean and free from snow, ice or other obstructions. It shall be the duty of such owner or occupant to remove new ice and freshly fallen snow from such sidewalk before nine o’clock in the afternoon of each day. In default thereof such owner or occupant shall be subject to such fine or penalty therefor as shall be prescribed by the council. Also the commissioner of public works[1] shall have power to remove all snow and ice which the owner or occupant has neglected to remove before the said hour of nine o’clock in the forenoon, or any obstruction upon the sidewalks, and no ordinance for the same need be passed, or notice given; the expense thereof shall be assessed and collected in the same manner as the expense of constructing and repairing sidewalks. Depositing snow and/or ice on streets is prohibited.

Snow Emergencies

When a snow emergency is declared, the City of Watervliet conducts a comprehensive snow removal process that requires residents to remove their vehicles in order for plows to clean streets from curb to curb. Any vehicles that do not follow this process are subject to ticket and tow from the area. Police vehicles precede the plows and direct residents to move their vehicles. Please contact the General Manager’s office for clarification on this process at 518-270-3800 ext. 122. Stay informed by tuning into local television and print medial news reports, NIXLE updates and the Watervliet Police social media outlets.
