Frequent Asked Questions of the Police Department
Mission Statement:
The mission for every member of this department is to consistently seek and find ways to affirmatively promote, preserve and deliver a feeling of security, safety and quality of service to the members of our community.
The Watervliet Police Department can trace it's roots back to 1896 when the department was first formed and consisted of four police commissioners, a captain, a sergeant, an acting sergeant and eight police officers.
From that modest beginning the department has grown to it's current strength of 26 sworn police officers - including Chief Boisvert, 2 civilian telecommunication specialists, a secretary and 4 part time school crossing guards
In addition to the patrol division the department also has an investigative unit, traffic safety unit, bicycle patrol and a school resource officer. One officer is also assigned to act as a liason with the local neighborhood watch program.
The department is proud of it's long tradition and as it enters into the second century of service to the City the mission to enhance the quality of life through the delivery of professional Police services remains.
The department handles an average of 1,400 calls per month.
