The City of Watervliet and the Combined Veterans Association of Watervliet sponsor an annual Memorial Day Parade held on the day of the Monday holiday.

The parade kicks off at 10:00 am and proceeds from the Watervliet High School parking lot to 19th Street, east to 2nd Avenue, then south to 16th Street and ends at the Veteran’s Memorial Park where a memorial service takes place honoring all veterans.

The Arsenal City Run is a 5K that began in 1982 and has drawn runners from all areas of the region. In addition to the 5K, there is a one mile fun run.  The race date for 2023 is Sunday, September 17, 2023.

The post-race festivities take place at the finish line and include food vendors, complimentary beer, face painting, live music and awards.  Proceeds from the race support the City of Watervliet Holiday Adopt-A-Family Program.

2022 Race Results

The City of Watervliet annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is the first Saturday of December at Veteran’s Memorial Park located at 16th Street and 2nd Avenue.  PLEASE NOTE – FOR 2022, THE CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY IS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26TH INSTEAD OF THE TRADITIONAL FIRST SATURDAY IN DECEMBER.  

Features include Christmas caroling, horse drawn carriage rides, refreshments and a souvenir tree ornament given to each family. Santa will also be paying a visit for the children’s enjoyment.

The City of Watervliet Heroes Banner Program is a tribute to those who are or have served in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces and who were born, lived in or currently reside in the City of Watervliet.

Families and friends can purchase a banner for $175. The banner will feature the serviceman’s/ woman’s picture along with his/her name and branch of service. The person must be in uniform and there cannot be additional people in the photo. Banners shall be displayed for as long as the integrity of the banner lasts (lifespan is approximately three to four years). It will then be the sponsor’s responsibility to replace the banner. Replacement banners cost $125.
